Anne-Sophie LAMINE

English

This is an investigation of the generation effect in Christian-Muslim relations. Inter-faith activities have been developing rapidly for the past 15 years in France. They raise questions related to religious identities, recognition of minorities and geopolitical effects. Christian participants are often pensioners, whereas Muslims are much younger. The issue of religious identity arises both among young Muslims and young Christians, but often has opposite effects. Muslims find a place for diversity and recognition in inter-faith, whereas the Christians find it difficult to affirm themselves as believers in a secular society and are less attracted to dialogue. The generation gap between younger and older Muslims, in addition to the effect on religiosity, influences relations with non-Muslims. Activities aimed at getting along together, rather than holding discussions, are generally more attractive to younger participants. Moreover, these inter-faith relations are strongly characterized by a failure to appreciate the other, which can turn into a kind of paternalism.
