What Do Believers Believe? A Survey in Poggibonsi (Italy)

Arnaldo NESTI

Via San Agostino 16, I-50125 Firenze, Italy nesti{at}unifi.it

The author of this article presents some results of a sociological research project into implicit religion in an area of Tuscany (Italy) that has been subject to rapid economic and social changes. From the analysis emerges a model of life based on material productivity, familial and social solidarity, while the religious beliefs of Catholicism, in spite of a certain belonging, remain in the background as traditional symbols. The function of rites is ambivalent. The author concludes that the essential characteristic of religion in his area is dynamism.
